Communication is yet another key in trust building and teamwork. Communication is more complex than we want to admit. Rushed communication in team work can get things done, but may not be getting the right thing done in the right way. Any communication transmits messages through two channels: content and context. Content is the actual words or symbols of the message which is known as language - it is the spoken and written words combined into phrases that make sense. Context is the way the message is delivered and is known as paralanguage - it is the non -verbal elements in speech such as the tone of voice, body language, and state of emotions. The incongruence between language and paralanguage is one of the causes of miscommunication. When content and context are not consistent with one another, it often causes messages to be misunderstood as we believe what we see (paralanguage) more than what we hear (language). Human nature is that we often trust the accuracy of nonverbal message more than verbal message. Research has confirmed that our visual processing power is much higher than our audio processing power.
